Trumped

Guilty on all 34 counts, the Don is surely done.

But we hear arguments that if he’s imprisoned, this’ll only galvanise his base all the more, make a martyr of him. Look at Hitler!

‘America is finished!’ we hear. Because Trump is America, and America is Trump, L’etat c’est moi.

But he’s already a martyr, that’s what the far-right are, they’re the ultimate in suffering persecution. And their biggest beef is either they win, and bigly, or it’s all rigged and a set-up, be it an election, a war, or in court, where evidence and truth are what count, not the loudness of the tirade.

If any of that factored into not sending them to prison, then they’d be absolutely right, the courts are politicised, justice is something that can be meddled with, and so meekly. Even if you’re found guilty, so long as people fear what might happen, you’re not going to go to prison, and in this case, you’re free to springboard back into the White House and turn your own country and the world into some racist gulag – indeed, continue as a client state.

The far-right, who love free speech and free protest when it’s in their favour and go all out to crush it when it’s not, love to tell ‘librulls and lefties and commies’ and anyone and everyone else to the left of them (that’s everyone) who they perceive to have taken over every vestige of power in the state, education, media … *breathe* … anyway, it’s illiberal and intolerant of the supposedly tolerant to be intolerant of the intolerant. As Popper put it, the trouble is, the intolerant will just kill you, as well as everyone else. That’s how Nazis work. So there is a requirement to defend the structure against the direst existential threat, and for its enemies hoping to skewer you on the horns of a paradox can’t cut no cheese for me.

He’s got to go down. Like Bolsonaro may well. Like Putin, and Netenyahu, and the leaders of Hamas, all with international arrest warrants on their bonces. The ICJ and the ICC are onto them. And yet, weirdly, their far-right aiders and abetters in the UK remain at large, plotting still to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and leave these people ever more adrift of any accountability, and its citizens of any protection. They’ll still be around, running the warrens of the UK’s offshore banking system, beavering away to bring down the post-war international order that Britain did so much to set up, in order to prevent anyone like the Nazis taking power or evading justice.

It’s not that Nigel Farage may or may not have to change his plans to go help Trump win in 2024, it’s that he’s been insisting he’d do so, on pain of not doing owt in the UK, for a guy who’d already been convicted, as well as impeached. As we saw with ex prime minister Liz Truss sharing a panel with Steve Bannon – a felon for his role in the January 6 uprising.

Or have they thus far evaded the justice of the system the Brits set up because Brexit hasn’t unleashed a revitalised colossus back upon the world, but a bitter little non-entity, a hanger-on, and vicious as Hell for it as these types always are.
